Virtual Biome: Treeless Bog

This 360 º virtual biome tour is taken off of Ballaine road in Fairbanks, Alaska.

 

Treeless bogs within the boreal forests of the Interior are extensive were conditions are too wet for tree growth. The   vegetation of this biome consists of varying amounts of grasses, sedges, mosses, especially Sphagnum.   Mostly this habitat is too wet for shrub growth, but on drier sites a number of heath or ericaceous shrubs may persist. You may encounter bog rosemary (Andromeda polifolia), resin birch (Betula glandulosa), dwarf arctic birch (Betula nana), leatherleaf (Calycanthus calyculata), narrow-leaf Labrador tea (Ledum decumbens), Labrador tea (Ledum groenlandicum), Sweetgale  (Myrica gale). several species of willow (Salix), bog blueberry (Vaccinium uligonosum), and mountain cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idea).
