By Erica Valentine June 29, 2018 June 29, 2018 1

The final plant I chose for my dissection was the tall bluebell (Mertensia paniculata  (Aiton) G. Don)).  Thanks for the great class.  I look foward to reviewing everyone else’s dissections in the coming days!

ELMValentine – Spreading dogbane dissection

By Erica Valentine June 29, 2018 June 30, 2018 1

The third plant I dissected for this  assignment was spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium L.).   I found a lot of these growing on the hill below our house.

ELMValentine – Twinflower Dissection

By Erica Valentine June 29, 2018 June 30, 2018 2

My second dissection was of a twinflower (Linnea borealis  L.).  I hesitated in picking this species to dissect because it’s so small and delicate, but I was pleasantly surprised  at the relative ease in dissecting it and zooming in on the small features.

ELMValentine – Fireweed Dissection

By Erica Valentine June 29, 2018 June 29, 2018 1

As I wrap up each of my four plant dissections, I’ll post them indivudally to the class website.  These dissections were fun to do, and a good challenge to use the new terms we used in class.   My first dissection was of fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium  (L.) Holub.  This was …

ELMValentine – Plant bingo – UPDATED

By Erica Valentine June 23, 2018 June 24, 2018 6

UPDATED 6/24/2018: This was a fun assignment. I found most examples to fill the ‘bingo card’ around our home in Fairbanks.  I was stumped in finding an example of silique near our house to fill the middle square.  Today I found a silique near the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Comunity …

Erica McCall Valentine Introduction

By Erica Valentine June 13, 2018 June 13, 2018 4

Hello, my name is Erica McCall Valentine.  My apologies for starting this class a wee-bit late.  I wear a number of “hats” and over the course of much of last week I was attending to a doula client.  Yes, you read that right, I said “much of last week”.  The …
